Despite its title, José Juárez, Irene Herner, and Arnoldo Martínez Verdugo present the work of Siqueiros through the unifying theme of the self-portrait, a recurrent theme for the artist during his career. Siquieros skills as a painter, draftsman, and muralist are presented well, despite other more arguable aspects of the essays. The variety of techniques represented by the different works illustrates the interest in Siqueiros for his technical mastery of art. Excellent chronology and a satisfying number of illustrations make this catalog a good introduction to the complex personality of the Mexican master –Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
