libro Literatura E Historia: Textos Sobre La Violencia En Colombia

This dissertation analyzes four contemporary novels that reflect the deep chaos of violence in modern Colombian society by addressing two main questions: First, what is the impact of violence in the literary creation of Alba Lucia Angel, Fernando Vallejo, Jorge Franco, and Santiago Gamboa. Second, how are the historical accounts of violence portrayed in their narratives and how is the role of writers shaped around the deep trauma of violence rooted in Colombian collective memory? These novels, I contend, are narratives that unveil a rich ore of historical events that mark a period in the development of their nation as a modern society. The introduction discusses how the dominant structures of power were established since the Conquest and how the social gap evolved as a main generator of violence. The second chapter examines the different aspects of social violence that Angel exploits to embark herself in a 146 feminist agenda to challenge the status quo of patriarchal male discourse and to claim for justice and recognition of women in Colombia. The third chapter explains how the writers of la sicaresca approach recent history or urban settings, specifically of the city of Medellin, as witness of new geographies of exclusion, decadence, social invisibility, and ultimately death. They poetize the voice of marginal subjects and their novels break the equation poverty equals violence. The final chapter explains how Gamboa deviates from the standard form of detective fiction. His transgression reflects new tendencies in the literary arenas in Colombia and in Latin America. Behind the multiple and personal stories interwoven in the text lies the misery of the common citizens in an environment of corruption and lack of justice. All of the studies novelists have immersed in the careful study of social practices and in their novels undermine the official discourse as they magnify their voices to claim for justice.
