In spite of the huge editorial success of popular short novel collections in Spain during the first thirty years of the 20th century, this specific and prolific genre has been understudied and silenced by tradicional literary criticism. My thesis aims to redress this deficiency by analysing one of the most important weekly collections of the period, La Novela Mundial (1926-1928) within the context of the evolution of the short novel genre. Taking as a frame a sociolitery approach and reader response theory, I analyse how this collection, published at the end of the golden period of this genre draws from a new mass of readers that had been consolidated itself since the end of the 19th century. Through a study of historical, economic and paratextual material, my thesis shows how the readers of this collection was much more sophisticated than the reader of the seminal short novel collection (El Cuento Semanal, 1907). Accordingly, the editors of La Novela Mundial manipulated paratextual information to offer the reader a more appealing product to satisfy their needs. Chapter 1 traces the emergence of the new reader of short novel collections by locating it within a general readjustment and natural evolution of the reader of popular magazines. Chapter 2 analyses the specifc paratextual information of El Cuento Semanal. Chapter 3 analyses the model of the ideal reader of La Novela Mundial. The contribution of my study includes not only an emphasis on the necessity of re-writing the literary history, but also a new understanding of the short novel collection as a product of an incipient and constantly evolving industrial society. Furthermore, it makes a substantial contribution to the study of the emergence of the new mass-reader in Spain and sheds light on the overall evolution of the short novel genre.
