This thesis examines the symbolical aspects of the butterfly in the Mirabals sisters and the emblematical features in the dictators myth linked to the character of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo presented in Julia Alvarezs novel In the Time of the Butterflies. This investigation was based on the symbolical theories of Manfred Lurker, David Fontana and Hans Biedermann. To delve into the significance and the origins of the myth we used Carlos Garcia Guals theory. We also used two articles by Francisca Noguerol-Jimenez to analyze the characteristics that define the dictators personality in the Latin-American novel and their presence in Rafael Leonidas Trujillos figure.
