Resumen del Libro:

libro El Papel Del Exilio Espanol En La Construccion De Identidades Culturales Hispanocaribenas (1934 1956).

The project deals with three intellectuals who, after the start of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, left Spain for the Spanish speaking Caribbean. These figures include the 1956 Nobel Prize winner Juan Ramon Jimenez, the philosopher Maria Zambrano, and the surrealist painter and poet, Eugenio F. Granell. The purpose of my dissertation is to study how these Spaniards redefined themselves as exiles in their host countries. I also analyze their contributions to the cultural programs formulated by members of the Generacion del Treinta in Puerto Rico, the Cuban group Origenes, and La Poesia Sorprendida in the Dominican Republic. In particular, I explore the common ground that local and Spanish intellectuals share in articulating the political discourse of hispanidad, especially as it occurs in language of national identity in Puerto Rico. In addition to appropriating Hispanic values, both the Origenes and La Poesia Sorprendida groups opted for the goal of universalization, providing an alternative to the cultural insularity imposed by their governments as well as reaction to a growing economic influence of the United States.
