This investigation presents the development of a water quality index (WQI) for the rivers in Puerto Rico. This index intent to classify the water quality in a scale from 0 to 100 according to the evaluate constituent and this allow to classify the water according to its state, good, moderate, average, alert, and poor. The WQI developed considered eleven constituents, fecal coli forms, ph, BOD5 days, dissolved oxygen, nitrates, total phosphorus, ammonia nitrogen, suspended solids, mercury, lead, and temperature, which were determined by the evaluation of a group of experts in water quality. The WQI was submitted to a strict evaluation to determine its goodness, deficiencies, and its application to the local conditions of Puerto Rico. The WQI is representative of water quality on a specific area where you got the sample and the moment when you get it. To demonstrate the applicability of the WQI we realized some analysis, among these analysis we made a temporary analysis for two USGS water quality stations in the Rio Grande de Anasco River. This analysis demonstrates the variation in the water quality trough the time allowing deducing over the tendencies of deterioration or recuperation of the river where the stations are localized. The studies conclude that both stations represent a WQI in alert state. Using this information of the water quality and the physical characteristic of the watershed between the USGS stations we realized a space analysis to determine the WQI according to the constituents variation in the river section between the two stations. This analysis was good to determine how the river tributaries contribute to the water quality. Also we realized WQI evaluations to different watershed in Puerto Rico for the same year and visualize the water quality variation trough the watersheds in Puerto Rico.
